10 Reasons to See an Olathe Chiropractor During the Holiday Season

As ‘Black Friday’ quickly approaches you can almost see the stress of the holiday season on the faces of your friends and coworkers.  With the pressures of the economy, traveling and shopping, a visit to a walk in chiropractor can make a huge difference.

10 Reasons to ‘Take a Load Off’ at an Olathe Walk In Chiropractor’s Office

walk in chiropractor kansas city
Stay Healthy. Holiday Headaches can be severe. See a Walk In Chiropractor when you need it most.

1. Stress Relief

Stress causes your body to tighten up.  Holding this position for long can cause headaches, neck pain and even pain in your jaw.

The holidays can cause stress for several reasons.  The loss of a loved one is often harder during the holidays.  Spending time with family members who don’t always agree, dealing with longer lines in the airport, driving in poor weather and even the financial strain of gifts can all lead to stress.

A quick trip to a walk in chiropractor can relieve pressure on your head and neck, restoring motion to the joints.

2.  Back Pain Relief after Lifting Boxes and Hanging Lights

During the holiday season, we often drag out heavy boxes full of ornaments, trees and other decorations. Abnormal motion injuries occur when you’re pushing and pulling heavy items.  This can put a strain on your back.

Remember to lift heavy objects by bending at the knee, and, whatever you do, don’t twist your body while your holding something heavy!

3.  Fight off Colds and Flu More Easily

Have you ever wondered why winter is the season for sickness? Decreased vitamin D levels from less sun exposure, spending most of our time indoors and increased sugar intake all weaken your immune system.

Plus, during the holidays, we’re often living in ‘close quarters’ with other family members or friends.  This can leave us susceptible to virus’ and bacteria through finger foods or even on door knobs and other surfaces.

Regular chiropractic adjustments can boost your immune system and help to restore lymph drainage.  This helps to strengthen your lungs and other organs, prevent ear and sinus infections and keep you healthy.

4.  Quicker Recovery from Traveling

Heading to the in-laws for the holidays?  Sitting in a car or on an airplane for an extended period of time can cause low back pain and sciatica.  Falling asleep while sitting up (like in an airplane or hopefully a passenger seat) can strain the muscles in your neck and cause headaches.

A visit to a walk in chiropractor after a trip can restore motion to your joints that have become locked up or fixated during your travels.

5.  It may be FREE

If you haven’t used all of the money in your flex account, your visit to a chiropractor could be free.  You may also have met your deductible for your insurance plan by now.  If this is the case (depending on the plan) any health-related services you receive until Dec 31st could be covered.

6.  Pain Relief After Raking Leaves or Shoveling Snow

Every year, our walk in chiropractors treat injuries related to shoveling and raking.  Stay healthy this year by following these tips for preventing winter injuries.

7.  Lower Back Pain Relief after Some Serious Shopping

If you’re thinking about braving the crowds on Black Friday this year, keep these tips in mind:  Lift heavy boxes and bags with your legs.  Remember to bend at the knee.  If you’re standing in line for long periods of time, squat once and awhile, shift your weight and sit down whenever you can to give your lower back a break.
Download Tip Sheet

8.  Headache Relief

There are several reasons for a headache.  Remember, pain is your body’s way of telling you that something is wrong.  Tight muscles can pull on the base of your skull.

Remember, it’s best to be evaluated by a chiropractor to rule out more serious reasons for headaches.

9.   Regulate the Emotional Ups and Downs

The holiday season can be depressing for those who have recently lost a loved one or aren’t able to make it home to visit family.  Stress, coupled with shorter days during the winter months can take its toll on your emotions.

Chiropractic adjustments help to balance the nervous system and eliminate pain.   Being pain free and healthier could be enough to restore a more uplifting mood and outlook.

10.  It Feels Great! –

If you find yourself entertaining, cooking, cleaning, shoveling, shopping, wrapping, decorating and just need a break, you may not need to know about all the science that backs it up.  A chiropractic adjustment is relaxing, helps to relieve stress and just feels great!

If you’d like to see if chiropractic care can help with your specific condition, give our clinic a call at 913-764-6237 or schedule an appointment by clicking below!

5 Easy Steps to Natural Migraine Relief | Kansas City

If you suffer from migraines, you can feel one coming on.  Speaking from experience, in that moment, you just might give anything to stop that migraine dead in its tracks.

Proven Techniques for Natural Migraine Relief | Kansas City

headache treatment kansas city
But none of us want to take pain pills every day.  The long-term side effects of that can cause stomach ulcers, kidney problems and other digestive issues.

Instead, we need to uncover the possible causes of your migraines and then take tangible steps toward natural migraine relief.

According to the Headache Center of Atlanta, adult migraines are triggered by:
  • stress (80%)
  • hormones (65%)
  • odors (44%)
  • lights (38%)
  • smoke (36%)
  • heat (30%)
  • food (27%)

Step 1 to Natural Migraine Relief: Avoid YOUR Migraine Triggers

Keep a journal or a piece of paper with you at all times.  At the first sign of a migraine, check for one of these triggers: alcohol, artificial sweeteners, caffeine, chocolate, processed lunch meat (with nitrates), dehydration, missed meals,  strained eyes, exhaustion, flickering lights, loud noises, and smells.

After a few weeks, check for patterns.  This can help you to identify a few of you migraine triggers so that you can avoid them.

Step 2 to Natural Migraine Relief: Exercise Regularly

Kansas City Natural Migraine Relief
Exercises is one of the top, proven techniques to natural migraine relief

Exercising regularly is one of the most effective ways to prevent and treat migraines, naturally.

Now, if you’re thinking,”The last thing I want to do in the middle of a migraine headache is to go for a run,”  then look at this: many people find that if they feel a migraine coming on, they can go for a walk or jog and avoid it completely!
Here’s a great list of some of the best places to walk (and even hike) in the Kansas City area!  Find one close to your house or work place and get out there.

Step 3 to Natural Migraine Relief: Chiropractic Treatment

For many migraine sufferers, the neck is a significant, contributing factor.  Chiropractic treatment involves specific, non-invasive, chiropractic adjustments that realign your bones and joints.  This allows them to bend and move as you bend and move.  When joints are locked up, they often irritate you nerves.  The nerves in your neck, at the base of your skull can often cause headaches and migraines if they are irritated.
Kansas City chiropractors use specific, focused adjustments to your joints to restore normal motion.
In a recent study at at Macquarie University, Dr Peter Tuchin studied the results of chiropractic treatment for chronic migraine sufferers.  The average length of time these study participants had been suffering from migraines was 18 years.)  He found that 50% of them had noticable improvement with chiropractic care.

Step 4 to Natural Migraine Relief: Diet Changes

Add Omega 3s

A good dose of these healthy fats fights inflammation.  Inflammation is often one of the root causes of migraines.  Adding in ground flax seeds to your morning smoothie, scheduling a few more meals with fish on your menu and even taking fish oil supplements can keep inflammation (and migraines) at bay.

Add Ginger

Add a little fresh ginger to your diet. Ginger helps with upset stomachs, but it can also help with migraine-related nausea.  Its anti-inflammatory properties can also ease pain.

Just make sure you get the real stuff – not ginger ale.

Step 5 to Natural Migraine Relief: Drink More Water

Many headaches and migraines are caused by dehydration.  If you feel a migraine coming on, drink a few glasses of water.  It might actually stop your migraine, cold.
The key is prevention.  If you can identify your triggers, take steps to avoid them and incorporate a few easy steps into your daily and monthly routine, you can keep your migraines at bay.

Get Rid of Your Headaches Once and For All

chiropractor for headaches overland park ksWhen Should You See a Chiropractor for Headaches?

All day long I listened to the crunch of the snow as my skis pushed left and right.  It was such a peaceful day at Winter Park ski resort.  Skiing in mid-February in the middle of the week is the time to ski.  I was practically the only one on the runs most of the day.

As a kid, my parents took us to the mountains almost every winter to ski for a few days, so today, as an adult, I was perfectly comfortable on skis and feeling a bit adventurous.

The lifts closed at 4pm, so I hopped on the last chairlift at 3:55 to get in one more run. I had made a plan with friends to to meet up at the lodge at 4:00, so I took the shortest, fastest way down.

The next thing I knew, I was on my back.

I had blacked out, and the ski patrol were trying to get me to respond.  It took me a few minutes to come to my senses, but they said I had hit a tree.

“How are you feeling?  Does anything hurt?” the ski patrolman asked.  I suddenly realized I was in serious pain. “My leg hurts, bad,” I exclaimed!

“We’ll get you down and to the hospital in just a couple of minutes,” he responded.  “Your leg might be broken, so try to lay still and relax.”

At the bottom of the mountain, I was transported to the hospital where my leg was examined and X-rayed.  The doctors determined that it was broken, so I received a cast and some crutches to use until it healed.

Now, Imagine if…

Now, imagine if the ski patrol had only asked what was hurting and then offered some ibuprofen to make it feel better, handed me my skis and then told me that they’d see me at the bottom.

“That would be silly!  No one would do that,” you say!

The truth is, that many of us do exactly that when it comes to headaches.

Instead of trying to determine the cause of our headache and then treating the cause, we treat the symptom by covering up the pain with pain meds.

There are plenty of products on the market that take care of headache pain for a short time, but headaches always return.  Chiropractic care can help you find the source of your headache and then eliminate it.

Seeing a Chiropractor for Headaches Ensures That You Uncover the Cause

Seeing a chiropractor for headaches keeps you focused on uncovering the cause of your pain. Once you know what’s causing it, you can explore natural pain relief  options that can fix it.  And, once the source of the problem is eliminated, the symptoms naturally go away.

In my case, once my broken leg had healed, I was back to running, jumping (and even skiing) again.

Headaches may be caused by many different problems.  During your initial exam, your chiropractor will conduct a series of physical and neurological tests (and X-rays) to determine the extent of you injuries.  Once he diagnoses your specific condition, he will discuss your treatment options.  Together, you can discuss how you’d like to move forward.

There are two primary types of headaches: migraines and tension headaches.  Your chiropractor will be able to diagnose the type of headaches you’re experiencing and determine the best course of action to treat them.

Why it Works

In a recent study, 87% of headache sufferers found complete relief, or at least significant improvement, from their headache pain after being treated by a chiropractor for headaches.

30% to 80% of the US adult population suffers from headaches each year.  The primary cause or “trigger” of these headaches is often some type of environmental or internal stress.  These stresses range from poor posture to too much time on your phone.  (Can someone say “Candy Crush?”)

By restoring motion to your joints in the neck and shoulders that often become locked up or fixated our Overland Park chiropractors use chiropractic adjustments and physiotherapy to eliminate the pressure that these joints often put on your nerves.

As a result, your headaches are almost always eliminated.

So the next time your headache comes back, instead of popping a pain pill, call and ask to speak with one of our Overland Park chiropractors at Fulk Chiropractic or schedule an appointment online.  You’ll spend a lot less money on medicine and get back to doing what you love.

Headache or Migraine? How to Tell the Difference.

Natural Headache and Migraine Relief

With over 60 different types of headaches and headache treatment centers popping up all over  Overland Park and Kansas City, it’s important to try to determine what the cause of your headache actually is before you consider all of your options.  Thousands of Kanas City patients are finding natural headache and migraine relief through chiropractic treatment, especially if the cause is due to a mechanical problem in your neck.

Migraines vs. Tension Headaches

The United States Department of Health and Human Services categorizes migraines as more severe than tension headaches, but what are the symptoms of each of them, and how can you tell them apart?  Compare your symptoms using the list below:
headache treatment kansas city

Tension Headaches

  • Pain: Mild to Moderate
  • Pain is described as a tightness or steady ache
  • Pain on one or both sides of the head

Migraine Headaches

  • Pain: Severe
  • Pain is described as pounding or throbbing
  • Pain on just one side of the head
  • Nausea
  • Sensitivity to light, sound or motion

Natural Headache Relief Through Chiropractic

It’s been shown through research that natural headache treatment through adjusting a mechanical problem in your neck has been shown to provide patients with both migraine relief and headache and pain relief.

But what’s a Mechanical Problem in the neck?

When a group of bones in your neck (vertebrae) become misaligned they no longer bend and move when you bend and move, they become locked up.  This can limit your ability to move your head and neck as freely as you once did before.  You may find it difficult to look over your shoulder in the car when you’re backing up, or your only symptom may be a headache.  In either case, chiropractic treatment can help to restore the motion you need to bend and move as you once did.

Chiropractic treatment  is the practice of using chiropractic adjustments to move joints that are locked up or fixated so that they begin to work properly again.  This restores motion, decreases inflammation and irritation and allows the nerves to move freely throughout the body as they were designed.   The chiropractic adjustment is not painful.  On the contrary, millions find headache and migraine relief through restoring normal motion to the bones in the neck.

Severe headache pain relief is possible, naturally, especially if the cause of the pain stems from a problem in the neck.

Pain Relief for Headaches During Pregnancy

Pregnant women often experience headaches due to their altered body position and the extra weight of the baby on their bones and joints.   Every year hundreds of Kansas City women seek out natural pain relief for headaches during pregnancy.  Chiropractic treatment is very successful in eliminating pain that results from a change in the mechanical structure of the spine, such as the case with pregnancy.

Even after the baby is born, women seek out chiropractic treatment for pain relief for headaches while they’re breastfeeding.  The body position that many mothers assume while breastfeeding often causes stiff joints between the shoulder blades and up into the neck.  Holding this body position for a long period of time often results in headaches and neck pain.

Chiropractors use special equipment to provide pregnant mothers with comfortable, effective, and completely natural headache and migraine relief.  Many local Kansas City OBGYN’s work closely with chiropractors to provide pregnant women the relief they need, especially during their third trimester.

Do You Know What Triggers Your Headaches? This List Will Surprise You.

Headache Pain Reliefheadache treatment kansas city

You wake up with a dull headache, but you’re hoping that it’s just the way you slept.  You hop in the shower, but by the end it becomes a throbbing headache.  You take a couple of pain
pills hoping that they will get you through the day, but by 10am you have to take a few more.  For some, this scenario is a weekly event, but for others, it’s even more often.   Though headaches are quite common (90% of adults have reoccurring headaches), they are always a sign that something is wrong.

It is estimated that Americans seeking headache pain relief through over-the-counter pain medication spend over $4 billion on pain relievers each year. Unfortunately, many of these pain relief pills don’t deliver, leaving behind a wake of headache sufferers still in pain.

Headache Triggers to Watch Out For | Headache Prevention

There are two main types of headaches: tension headaches and migraine headaches. Some headache triggers are more obvious than others.  Keep these tips in mind the next time you experience a headache.  There may be more you could do to prevent them.

  • boss cause headache pain reliefYour Boss – Yep.  It’s not just a joke.  If your boss stresses you out, it could leave you more susceptible to tension headaches.
  • Bad Posture – You don’t have to do any heavy lifting to build up pressure in the head and neck muscles.  Pushing your head forward to see the computer screen or arching your back will do the trick, too.  Look at your workspace.  Position your screen at eye level and your keyboard so that your arms bend at a 90 degree angle.
  • Deli Ham and Red Wine – Sorry.  Processed meats and red wine often contain tyramine, and some meats contain harmful nitrates that can sometimes trigger a headache.
  • An Empty Stomach – Skipping that lunch break might help you meet a deadline, but the drop in your blood sugar could trigger a headache.   Don’t try to keep your motor running with sweets, though.  That piece of chocolate can cause a sudden increase in your blood sugar followed by an even lower drop.
  • Second Hand Smoke – Spending a significant amount of time near someone who is smoking exposes your brain to nicotine, causing your brain’s blood vessels to narrow.  When your heart can’t pump enough blood through to the brain, it causes pressure to build up.  The result?  You guessed it: a headache.
  • Tight Ponytails – You read that right.  Tight hair accessories pull on the connective tissue in your scalp.  This includes headbands, hats and even sunglasses that push on the sides of your head.  If you feel a headache coming on, it might be time to let down your hair.
  • Dehydration – Similar to an empty stomach, not drinking enough water can result in headaches.  Keep a glass next to your desk and sip it throughout the day.  A straw may help more than you think.

By identifying your headache triggers, you can take steps to prevent future headaches.  Keep a pain journal and write down when your headaches occur.  Think about what you were eating or doing around the time of each headache.

Common Headache Symptoms

Pain anywhere on the head or neck area can be a symptom of a headache.

  • Pain behind one or both eyes
  • Pain above or on the eyebrows
  • Pain below the eyes
  • Pain along the back of the head or top of the neck
  • Pain around the jaw or ears
  • Pain behind the temples
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Dizziness

Headache Pain Relief Options

Chiropractic Checkup – Through a chiropractic exam and evaluation, a chiropractor can determine the condition of your spine and joints in your head and neck.  By freeing up areas in your neck that are not moving correctly, chiropractic adjustments restore normal motion and eliminate the swelling in your joints that often causes headaches.

Stretching – Neck exercises can often provide some headache pain relief by stretching and moving the muscles and ligaments in the neck.  Be sure to do each exercise correctly to avoid any further injury.

Avoid Your Triggers – What triggers a headache on one person may not be a problem for someone else.  By keeping track of what triggers your headache, especially if it’s food or environment-related, you may be able to find headache pain relief simply through elimination.

Remember, headaches are your body’s way of telling you that something is wrong.  If you can uncover the cause and not just treat the symptoms, you’ll wake up refreshed and ready to take on whatever challenges and adventures each day brings.

The 11 Olathe Chiropractors at Fulk Chiropractic specialize in headache pain relief.  They work closely with local medical doctors and physical therapists to clearly identify the cause.  Through headache treatment and prevention, they have helped thousands of headache patients eliminate pain and transform their quality of life.

To learn more about how chiropractic may help with your specific condition schedule an appointment online, and mention this post to receive a complementary physical and neurological exam with one of our qualified doctors.
